CLAS is a computer assisted developmental scoring system that can accommodate a wide range of texts from diverse knowledge domains. CLAS's algorithm is based on the analysis of tens of thousands of texts that have been scored by Lectical Analysts with the Lectical Assessment System (LAS). At its core is the Lectical Dictionary—the worlds first developmental dictionary. To date, over 125,000 qualifying words and phrases have been entered into the dictionary. The Lectical Dictionary is currently calibrated primarily for the humanities, but can be calibrated to include any knowledge domain. At present, we are expanding into the sciences.

Like the LAS, CLAS can be used:

CLAS has several advantages over the LAS:

  1. it makes it possible, for the first time, to conduct large scale developmental assessment,
  2. it is easily expandable into new knowledge domains
  3. it is entirely objective, and
  4. it dramatically reduces the cost of scoring large numbers of assessments.
